Ship Salvage:

GRATES, HATCH COVERS & deck flooring
Used as flooring, covering a hatch or placements requiring frequent drainage on board ships, grates are typically made from hardwoods but softwoods were/are also used depending on the budget of the ship and placement of the particular piece.

The hatch covers (aka hatch boards or beams) we salvage are typically solid slabs of wood with metal bands around each end and strips across a shallow indentation where cargo hooks - or hands - could pick them up.  They were used to cover holds on a ship and were manually set and removed in the days before hydraulic and mechanical metal hatches came about.

Salvaged Grates

Salvaged grates were used as flooring on board ships or to cover holds or hatches.  Many pieces were custom fitted around instruments or built-in structures on the vessel, hence the various shapes.
These make "great" coffee tables, hanging pot racks, headboards, or simply stand-alone art.

Hatch boards, aka hatch covers or beams, were thick slabs of wood used to cover holds (openings) in the decks of ships where cargo was stored.

Modern hatches are typically mechanically operated large metal covers and no longer need to be moved by hand.
